Julio Cabrera, Da Aristotele a Spielberg
The initial impulse behind this book was to consider various philosophical problems through an analysis of certain films. We discover Aristotle through one of the masterpieces of Neorealism, Vittorio De Sica’s Ladri di biciclette; Francis Bacon through Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park; Decartes through Hitchcocks’s great work Rear Window; while Hegel’s concept of time can be found in Paris, Texas by Wim Wenders. Reading Cabrera’s book we find a panorama of two thousand five hundred years of philosophical thought, hand in hand with one hundred years of cinematographic imagery. Julio Cabrera is professor of Contemporary Philosophy at the University of Brasilia.

Paris pour escale
This catalogue was created to coincide with the exhibition held at the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris. Works by artists from various different nations, all of whom have worked in Paris and continue to do so today, are reproduced in full-page color photographs. On one hand, the book gives consideration to the initial difficulties that artists face in gaining recognition. On the other, it explores how new vigor and a broader cultural dimension have been injected into the Parisian and French art scene thanks to cultural immigration. Italy is “represented” by Alessandra Tesi.

Paris pour escale, Éditions des musées de la Ville de Paris, 2000, 125 pages, 16,5 x 23 cm.

VB 08-36 Vanessa Beecroft Performances
This book is the first to collect together photographic documentation of the performances carried out by Italian artist Vanessa Beecroft. Born in Genoa, Beecroft has been resident in New York for several years. Her most celebrated works—true “tableaux vivants” involving female models staged in a variety of settings—are recorded here. The earliest of these events were carried out in 1994, such as that at the PS1 in New York where the girls wore red plaited wigs, and continue through those performed in 1998, at the Solomon R. Guggenheim in New York and the Galerie für Zeitgenössische Kunst in Leipzig. There is an introductory text by Dave Hickey.

Clayton Days. Picture Stories by Vik Muniz
This book forms an elegant catalogue bringing together the series of photos created by artist Vik Muniz during the year he spent at the American Frick Art & Historical Center. While staying there, Muniz produced these black-and-white images as a “documentary” of the life story of Henry Clay Frick and his family—a story which the artist could sense unfolding as he passed through the vast, elegant rooms of the Pittsburgh residence. There is a text in English by Andy Grundberg and an interview by Linda Benedict-Jones.

X’MAS. Bettina Rheims
This catalogue documents Bettina Rheims’ most recent works—her “X’mas” series of photos—which depict seductive images of women, photographed in diverse interiors. At times set against imaginary backgrounds or plunged into a barren whiteness, the characters portrayed are typically naked adolescent figures, dressed only in different combinations of white underwear.
