If you type in anemone.cx/symbiosis, at first it seems as though you run the risk of sitting in front of a static, jet-black screen. After a brief wait, however, a thin line appears that the user controls and, as it is moved around, creates entirely new and original formations. Artist Eric Deis’ Internet project Symbiosis won first prize in the Web category at the last edition of the Film Winter Festival (www.filmwinter.de) in Stuttgart, even though it isn’t an experiment on the psychology of perception. It is, rather, a virtual environment that explores the communication of gesture. Prior to Symbiosis, Deis had already created another project, called Beauty and Chaos. Both are components of the interesting Rhizome collection and can be found in the “ArtBase,” section, which is continually updated.

Apexart is an American exhibition space and a non-profit organization managed by Steven Rand. Its agenda is varied: they run a series of shows annually (each year they are chosen by a jury of international experts, including two projects not commissioned by the center itself), an artist-in-residence program for those not resident in the US, as well as conventions and meetings. The site imparts information regarding the current exhibitions, future projects, special events, and directions for participating in the space’s activities. One of the more recent shows was Gain, curated by Kelly Taxer, who invited six artists whose work includes various new technological innovations.

Everything started with an advertising campaign that involved Gijs Müller, who, for a certain period, had constantly used the phrase “Your newest friend” in all his public appearances. Subsequently, the Dutch artist appeared all over the place as everybody’s best friend: on television, newspapers, and magazines. Naturally, the manoeuvre worked and Müller received thousands of e-mails that he replied to for a period of about six months. The site, in Dutch, as well as English ( www.yournewestfriend.com), and French ( www.votrenouvelami.com), is one of the concrete realizations of the project, which by its nature is decidedly conceptual. Above all, the artist plays with the mechanisms of marketing by turning himself into a commercial and mass media phenomenon. In an interview, the artist was asked, “What is your main aspiration?” to which he replied “My everyday life. I respond to space, time, and the situations that I live through.”

“The mode is the message – the code is the collective!” is emblazoned across this home page. It appears to be the motto of OBN (Old Boys Network), which has its headquarters in Hamburg. Despite its misleading name, the group is made up exclusively of female artists and theoreticians from all over the world, who recently organized the “The Very Cyberfeminist International Conference.” The site is a true female network, presenting their collective and individual projects, writings, and offering the possibility to subscribe to a list of discussions on themes dealing with cyberfeminism, technology, and women in general.

Attitudes is a contemporary art center based in Geneva. Curated by Jean-Paul Felley and Olivier Kaeser, it’s committed to the promotion of young artists and research not just in the visual arts field but also in that of experimental sound and performance. Besides listing the center’s activities (exhibitions, video projections, conferences, symposia), the English- and French-language site is divided into various sections, each distinguished by hot fluorescent colors. These sections contain information ranging from the complete list of artists presented by the center since 1994, along with multiples produced during their shows there, through their wide range of publications, to a part that groups together a numerous selection of links to other interesting sites.
