The site of the Museum of Modern Art of New York offers several services which can be accessed from the home page. It is possible to visualise the vast collection of the museum, subdivided into various categories: architecture-design, film-video, painting-sculpture, photography, prints-illustrated books; and to have on information visiting exhibitions at the Museum and the full programme of various activities that may happen, such as meetings, special events, film and video projections d’auteur. One particularly dynamic section of the site represents art projects on-line, in collaboration with, for the most part, artists. Peter Halley, for example, has created an interesting project entitled “Exploding Cell” in which the active participation of the visitor is expected.

Following the international festival of art in Internet organised sito http://www.net-art.org which offered visitors to the site the opportunity to vote on-line for the most interesting work, the Machida City Museum of Graphic Art of Tokyo is sponsoring the exhibition “Art on the net”, an art festival in which many artists from all over the world are participating, from Japan to Belgium, from Mexico to Canada. The theme of this fifth edition of the festival (after 1995’s “The age of Chaos”; 1996’s “Homepage Art”; 1977’s “The future of Japan in VRML” and 1998’s “The age of streaming media”) - with explicit reference to the famous text of Walter Benjamin - is dedicated to art in the area of technical reproduction. The international jury did not find it opportune to award the Gran Prix to any of the projects submitted. David Crawford, however, was given the Silver Prize with the site http://www.lightofspeed.com/bots.html, and Arcangel Constantini and Dan McCormack were both awarded the Bronze Prize. As every year, there were many honorary mentions . It’s already possible to see the prize-winning entries on the site, while a “virtual gallery” is being prepared, gathering together the works from previous editions of the festival.

Arte.net could be defined as a true automatic archive for art. It is a site that brings together numerous information sub-divided into various principle categories (artists, people, exhibition spaces, publishing, services) and sub-categories (video, web, cyber artists, books/magazines, publishers, auction houses, workshops, courses). The archive grows day by day as anyone can freely register themselves, their address, their work and what they are doing. The graphics of the site are very poor but its potential lies exclusively in the wealth of information it gathers.

The historical sites of the Tate Gallery, originally founded in London in 1897, then in Liverpool in 1988 and most recently in St. Ives, have been “virtually unified” on one unique site, with essential graphics, simple to consult. For each gallery there is all the information about times of opening, instructions for getting there (with lots of maps), an area dedicated to shopping with the possibility of acquisition on-line and, naturally, news of present and upcoming exhibitions. It is possible to view the various collections, including new acquisitions. At the moment the home page is dominated by the prestigious Turner Prize 1999, with the catalogue of the artists selected – Tracey Emin, Jane and Louise Wilson, Steve McQueen and Steven Pippin –, the presentation of their works and some pictures.

The site – in English, German and French – is a true point of reference for Swiss art. It is rich with information and offers numerous links with galleries, museums and Swiss artists. The most visited section is “The guide”, a type of calendar, consistently updated, of all the exhibitions being held in Switzerland. Apart from this, the site provides a series of international links, for research, a forum, a section dedicated to the art market with the opportunity to buy and sell paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints etc. and a page dedicated to the artist of the day.
