The web-site home page of the Wolfsburg Kunstmuseum, whose building was designed by architect Peter Schweger, takes the form of a sort of dynamic, multicolored chessboard. Different squares give access to a series of services related to the museum and its activities. Other than housing a permanent collection, the museum, which is supported by a private foundation, plans a series of temporary exhibitions, events and forums on modern and contemporary art. All the information contained in the site, in English and German, is organized clearly, thanks to the use of explanatory scrolling windows which open in each area. In the section “Getting There”, for example, there are details of how to reach the museum both for visitors arriving by plane and those coming by train or car, or in the section “Press” it’s possible to find information about forthcoming exhibitions and reviews of past ones.

The artist Miltos Manetas was born in Athens, but currently lives between New York and Los Angeles. In November 1998, together with the architect Andreas Angelidakis and curator Ginger Freeman, he created Chelsea, a forum for art and architecture hosted by Active Worlds and accessible via his personal web-site. The site has relatively minimal, stylized graphics and develops horizontally, gathering together information about the artist and his work, from oil paintings to performance art. Worth noticing are the black dots on the white background concealing various links, including neen.org which the artist describes as “an undefined generation of visual artists”.

TAM, or rather, The Alternative Museum, is a no-profit artistic institution founded in 1975 and located on Broadway, New York. The main aim of The Alternative Museum is to explore new ways of presenting contemporary art and culture. It’s for this reason the on-line version was launched. The site contains work by Internet artists, shown in the form of temporary “exhibitions”, such as Virgil Wong’s curious 1988 project GenoChoice and digitally altered photographs like the series “Between the Real and the Unreal“ by Simen Johan. The museum also offers a six month artist-in-residence’ program for creating Internet artworks to be shown on the site and publishes an electronic journal of contemporary art directed by Cristine Wang with reviews and articles.

Location One is a no-profit organization founded in 1996 in New York and managed by Claire Montgomery. The primary interest of this exhibition space, situated in SoHo, in the heart of Manhattan, is to consider the artistic contamination provoked by the combination and integration of a variety of expressive media such as video, computer and the Internet. The idea is to create a new arena for contemporary art which promotes a fusion of old and new media and to set up collaborations between artists from various disciplines. The site is also host to specifically created Internet projects like Way Words by Robert Janz located in the “Project Room”. In May the American artist Lisa Bateman launched Location1’s film/video program with her video-installation Vivisection. The piece could be viewed not only in the New York gallery itself, but also on-line via a direct “real-time” link.

"Dislocation is cool. Cyberspace is our land"! This is the spirit of Austrian artists Elisa Rose and Gary Danner, joined in life and art with the name Station Rose. The performance act, formed by the union of sound, projections of tridimensional spaces and digital images, is at the basis of their artistic investigation. They organize performance all over the world, and, thanks to Web Casting, it is possible to follow them through their Internet site, which transmits images and sound in real time. It is necessary to sign up in their mailing list in order to be kept up to date with their activities and the dates of their involving and dynamic performances.
