The ArtScience Research Laboratory is a non-profit making workshop for interdisciplinary research founded in New York in 1988 by Rhonda Roland Shearer and Stephen Jay Gouldnel. Artists, scientists, art historians, graphic designers, computers programmers and intellectuals of various disciplines investigate the relationship between arts and science with the aim of creating a network to exchange information and create a network to exchange information and create multimedial products that unite scientific and artistic research. The site’s first project is dedicated to the life and work of Marcel Duchamp. Even if the graphics are quite elementary -giving the idea of a web page of a high school student, rather than that of a research workshop- the site gathers together news, links, useful articles towards the knowledge of the celebrated dadaist artist. Apart from this, an electronic newspaper called “Tout -Fait”: The Marcel Duchamp Studies’ is in preparation, which will collect various contributions from writers and academics from diverse fields on the work of the French artist.

Franklin Furnace was born in New York in 1976. In the last twenty-add years, this American organisation has gained both national and international recognition. Through the site it is possible to access a rich archive of videos -some of which can be viewed on-line- and art books and to visit the so-called “netcasting series”, during which some young artists are invited to present their work to a world-wide audience, thanks to the technology of Real player. Among the artists, some of whom are by now famous, who have taken part in projects with Franklin include Barbara Kuger and Jenny Holzer. FF, with the support of the Jerome Foundation and the New York State Council on the Arts, are planning a grant-programme for emerging young performance artists. All those who wish to participate will find information on the site.

The American artist Victoria Vesna, after giving light to a true virtual comunity on a global scale, thanks to her Bodies Incorporated project, now presents F-e-mail, a network for women who work using the web, be they artists or researchers working in different fields. The site is a place to meet and to tell or share personal experiences. F-e-mail, obviously a play on words, is an explicit reference to the female mail art movement and is a sign of the use of a new channel for the creation of exponential connections.

Eduardo Kac is an artist who investigates the philosophical and political dimension of the communicative process through the realisation of works in which, often, real and virtual space co-exists. Internationally noted in the ‘eighties as the pioneer of Holopoetry and Telepresence art, Kac has given life to a new form which he himself defines as Transgenic art. The artist works principally with the new media, including holography, computers, video, robotics, Internet and the biological systems. The site – on line since 1995 – reconstructs in detail the history of the artistic journey of Eduardo Kac through the documentation of all his works, his writings and biographical information.

World Wide Arts Resources represents an indispensable aid for all those -artists, art dealers, critics, collectors, art-lovers - who revolve inside the world of art. The site, easy to consult, collects the links of museums, galleries, exhibitions from all over the world and is a rich database of artists, consultable in alphabetic order and/or artistic discipline; it provides a chat service with which you can get in contact with what the site defines as other “arts enthusiasts” but, above all, it offers the possibility to subscribe to “Art News Today”. The visitor, once subscribed, will receive at his/her personal e-mail address, up to date and useful information of the current world artistic scene. Apart from the visual arts, the site is also concerned with dance, theatre, opera, literature, cinema and performance art.
