2002 is the year
in which the new century really begins. I would like it to be, for
several reasons. On September 11, 2001, we experienced incredulity,
dismay, and fear. For weeks we held our breath-everybody, including
the art world. We cancelled trips, delayed exhibitions, put projects
on indefinite hold. There has been much discussion and writing about
the need for change, the search for new equilibrium, the responsibility
of artists and art in general. It is impossible to think that tragedies
like those in New York and Washington would not prompt the shaping
of a new consciousness, one that can lead us toward a profound existential
balance, clearly articulated life goals, and more defined ethical
choices. The argument is indiscriminately valid for all members of
society: politicians, laborers, artists, doctors, teachers, and students
alike. We all perceive the necessity for a renewal of ethical values
that are not merely consumerist desires or market demands in disguise.
