New Art from London
The 1990s have
witnessed an explosion of activity on the contemporary
art scene in Britain, most of it focused on London.
A number of artist-organised exhibitions in ‘non fine
art’ settings, starting with Freeze, in 1988,
have set the pace. These one-off, professionally organised,
exhibitions achieved immediate notoriety and, together
with the proliferation of publicly subverted, artist-run,
not-for -profit galleries, have had the effect of inspiring
the new generation with confidence in their own creative
potential.
The leading figures of the last decade have included
Damien Hirst, Mat Collishaw, Anya Gallaccio, Cornelia
Parker, Gillian Wearing, Gary Hume, Tracey Emin, Douglas
Gordon and Steve McQueen…
