  Lou Reed, Timothy Greenfield-Sanders, 1997.

Timothy Greenfield-Sanders

Having shot both Hillary Clinton and Monica Lewinsky, alongside a virtual "Who’s Who" rolodex of contemporary personalities from film, music, fashion, politics and art, Timothy Greenfield-Sanders’ work epitomizes the dynamics of perpetuating fame via portraiture.

Lou Reed: Why is it that people come to you? There are so many photographers, why you?
Timothy Greenfield-Sanders: I don’t know… I try to show people the way they see themselves. No gimmicks. I’m a minimalist. A basic camera, basic lights, let the person come out.

LR: Oh, but everybody knows that. That’s Photography 101. It’s got to be a little more complicated than that, Timothy.
TG-S: Well, then let’s combine that simplicity with an ability to work well with people. And do it quickly. I’m aware of how to make a person comfortable in front of a camera. A photo session is very, very tense for most people. I work hard at giving people the confidence to be in front of a camera…
