Marc von Criegern, Small guy - big time, 1999.

Enigma

Although it might seem obvious to look back to our traditions for wisdom and inspiration in every area of our lives, the art of this century has often seen the past as a taboo to be ashamed of or even to be destroyed. In my work, however, there are often ties to tradition. Most of the time, small details trigger my imagination. For example, one of my paintings was inspired by a work by Watteau, in which a collector puts away a painting in a box and closes the lid. Another time I was fascinated by the illustrations in Diderot’s famous Encyclopedie, the very first illustrated dictionary in history. My work is highly narrative, which is why I am always looking for all sorts of inspiration for new stories and new people.

Movies have also had an enormous impact on my work: from those wonderfully bizarre situations in the black and white films to films of David Lynch…
