The eighth edition in the series of artist encounters La Generazione delle Immagini, subtitled Reality’s Desire-Desiderio di realtà and organized by the City of Milan and curated by Roberto Pinto, has been scheduled to begin in January at the Triennale. Martin Creed has been named the winner of the 2001 Turner Prize. Madonna gave away the prestigious £20,000 prize at the December 9 award ceremony held at London’s Tate Britain, broadcast live on Channel 4. The other artists on the shortlist were Richard Billingham, Isaac Julien, and Mike Nelson.

At the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence, a retrospective of American photographer Margaret Bourke-White is on show through February 17. The exhibition documents her artistic practice starting in the early ’20s, which dealt with themes such as the difficult subject of the huge social upheavals taking place in the nation such as marginalization and poverty, as well as the industrialization of the country seen in her urban landscapes of factories and shipyards. Absolutely not to miss are her images of Europe at the end of the Second World War, including the concentration camps, contemporary images of Russia, Mexico in the ’50s, the India of Mahatma Gandhi, and the South African mines.

From November 30 through March 22, 2002, the Sammlung Goetz in Munich is presenting a cycle of video projections by Anri Sala, born in Tirana and now a resident of Paris. On show are Uomoduomo, presented at the last Venice Biennale, which will be on view from November 30 to December 21; Byrek (January 7 to February1); Nocturnes (February 4 to March 1); and one of his first videos, Déjeuner avec Marubi (March 4 to March 22).

Damien Hirst’s “Farmacy online” is the first project in the new series sponsored by the Tate Modern, which means to make special presentations of works by artists in the London institution’s collection. “Farmacy online” presents an eponymous piece recently installed at the public museum, and an audio interview of the artist with the writer Gordon Burn. Visitors to the website can see the Pharmacy at a 360-degree panoramic view.

From November 20 through February 24, 2002, the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain in Paris is holding the retrospective of American photographer William Eggleston. For the first time ever in France, a large collection of one hundred and fifty of the artists most important works are being presented together. The show starts with his early black-and-white prints up to works that were made specifically for the occasion. Simultaneously, the parisian foundation is holding a show of Gérard Garuste works.

The next Whitney Biennial has been scheduled for March 7 through May 26. The artistic director will be Lawrence Rinder, one of the six curators of the preceding biennial, who will be assisted by Chrissie Iles (film and video), Debra Singer (performance and audio art), and Christiane Paul (new media art).
