Erik Loyer is an artist, composer, and programmer whose work explores the creative potential of new media and the development of digital components. His point of departure is the iconographic vocabulary of video games, with particular attention to sound. In 1998 he was conferred the Invision Silver Award, and his winning piece forms part of the online collection of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. This project, The Lair of the Marrow Monkey, is a hypertextual interactive tale relating the fortunes of a mythical character called Orion 17, who, in the imaginary city of Keye, stumbles across a substance that gives people strange visions. The follow-up to marrowmonkey, which has already been shown at a few international festivals, is Chroma, a serial story based on the question of racial identity.

Storybeat is a current project by the artist Geoffrey Thomas, who experiments with new modes of interaction, animation, and narration using the means offered up by the Web. The site’s different sections, “Distort,” “Adjust,” “Connect,” “Inspect,” Coalesce,” essentially contain a series animations that, with their particular use of color, in some cases sound, and without any textural explanations, present a variety of means for representing nature and its human perception. In order to view the project, you have to install the most recent version Shockwave Player.

Ken Goldberg is an artist and associate professor of industrial and electrical engineering, born in Nigeria and raised in Pennsylvania, who principally explores themes bound to robotics, telematics, interactivity, telepresence and online experimentation. The site covers all of his realized projects since1987, among them The Tele-Actor (2000) and Quija (2000) which require the direct participation of the visitors. Another is The Telegarden (http://telegarden.aec.at/) a special project, still active today, developed for the Ars Electronica Center in 1995, in which it is possible to interact with a robotic arm equipped with a telecamera that allows the visitors to view and interact with a remote garden filled with living plants

Artfutura is an annual festival that has been held since 1990 Barcelona, Madrid, and Seville. Over the years, such artists as Karl Sims, Laurie Anderson, Yoichiro Kawaguchi, and Stelarc have taken part in the event, as well as academics and internationally-known writers, among them William Gibson, Arthur Kroker, and Timothy Leary. Artfutura’s interest is focused on art that forges a relationship with new media and with new experimental environments where investigations into sound, visuals, and technology all run together, from digital images to robotic installations. The site is bursting with information about the festival, including an archive on the previous editions as well as this year’s. The section “Digital Jam,” curated by Roberta Bosco and Stephano Caldanan, introduces projects made specifically for the Internet from a selection of artists such as Eric Zimmerman, Marek Walczak, Martin Wattenberg, and Andy Deck.

http://www.netartmuseum.org/

Supported by The Armchair Universe in London, the Netartmuseum exclusively gathers together works produced specifically for the Internet, simultaneously contributing to the preservation of ephemeral works that would otherwise risk being lost on the Net, also because many presented works are never really finished. When you log on to the museum’s homepage, an image appears of a futuristic building, which supposedly houses the collection. It’s odd to visit a museum that, like a traditional exhibition space, presents the various projects and their related links floor by floor. Among the artists whose works are already on show in the museum’s collection are: Olia Lialina, Victoria Vesna, and JODI. The only porject which has been expressly commissioned is The Central City by the British artist Stanza.
